Afghanistan COP Mortar Pit 1/35 Scale Diorama

This project recreates a combat outpost mortar position inspired by deployments in Afghanistan. Built at 1/35 scale, the diorama focuses on terrain realism, defensive structure detail, and environmental weathering reflective of arid operational environments.

The terrain was constructed using layered foam and textured groundwork, shaped to replicate compacted earth and worn defensive positions. Subtle elevation changes were added to create depth and natural flow across the scene.

Color modulation and dry brushing were used to build realistic dust variation, while pigments were applied to replicate fine Afghan soil. The mortar pit was weathered to reflect operational wear, blending structural elements seamlessly into the surrounding terrain.

The goal of this piece was to balance realism with narrative restraint, capturing a functional military position without over-dramatizing the scene.
